Lesson 5  dis- & un-

 

第六種否定字首或前綴是 dis-,重音在 dis-之後,可接在動詞、形容詞及名詞之前。常見的單字如下表:

Jack has been a loyal worker in this company for almost 50 years.

傑克是這間公司忠誠的員工,已經工作了快50年了。

 

It would be disloyal to abandon them.

放棄他們是不忠誠的。

Honest

誠實的

Dishonest

不誠實的

I’d like you to give me an honest answer.我希望你給我一個誠實的回答。

 

I'm convinced she's being dishonest about what happened and is just trying to avoid the blame.

我確信她對所發生的事情不誠實,只是為了避免受到指責。

 

Similar

相似的

Dissimilar

不同的

The two sisters are so similar that it's almost impossible to tell one from the other.

這兩姐妹是如此相似,以至於幾乎不可能區分彼此。

 

The new house is not dissimilar to our old one, except it’s slightly bigger.

新房子跟我們的舊房子相比並沒有甚麽不同,只是稍微大了一點。

 

Content

Discontent

不滿足的,不滿意的

I was just content to see my daughter in such a stable relationship but a grandchild, that really was the icing on the cake.

我只是滿足於我的女兒可以擁有一個穩定的關係,而有一個孫子,那確實是錦上添花。

 

There was widespread discontent with the plan.

我人們對該計劃普遍感到不滿。

 

Honour

(美honor)

We fought for the honour of our country.

我們為我們國家的榮譽而戰。

 

It was no dishonor to be beaten by such a strong opponent.

敗給如此強勁的對手沒有什麼可羞愧的。

As the demonstration began to turn violent, the police were called in to restore order.

當示威遊行開始演變成暴力活動時,警察奉召到來恢復秩序。

 

The opposition party have been in disorder for so long that have pose no real threat to the present government.

反對黨長期處於混亂狀態,因而不會對現政府構成真正的威脅。

I don’t know how it’s possible for a person to disappear without trace.

我不明白一個人怎麼會消失得無影無蹤。

·       The council decided to close the library and now the building stands empty.

理事會決定不開放圖書館,現在大樓空無一人。

 

·       This information cannot be disclosed without authorization from a minister

·       未經部長授權,此訊息不可公開。

Hearten

使振作,鼓舞

Dishearten

使沮喪

Anti-government protesters have been heartened by recent government promises of free and fair elections.

政府最近承諾的自由公正的選舉鼓舞了反政府示威者。

 

The thought of how much work she had to do dishearten her.

她一想到還有那麼多工作得做感到很沮喪。

Obey

服從,遵循

Disobey

不服從,違抗

·       He hated being in the army because he had to obey commands.

他討厭當兵,因為必須要服從命令。

The soldier disobeyed the general’s orders.

士兵不服從將軍的命令。

 


 

第六種否定字首或前綴是  un-,重音在 un-之後,可接在動詞、形容詞、副認及名詞之前。常見的單字如下表:

不能,無法

·       Do not feel like you are less qualified or less competent to be able to do the job because you are different.

·       不要因為你的不一樣而覺得你沒有資格或沒有能力去勝任這個工作。

·        

·       We were unable to contact him at the time.

當時我們無法跟他取得聯繫。

Certain

確定的

Uncertain

不確定的

One thing is certain – she won’t resign willingly.

有一點是肯定的——她不會心甘情願地辭職。

 

These refugees face an uncertain future.

難民們面臨著無法預料(不確定)的未來。

Happy

快樂

Unhappy

不快樂

School days are said to be the happiest days of your life.

學生時代可說是一生中最快樂的時光。

 

·       She had an unhappy childhood.

·       她有個不快樂的時童年。

Known

已知的,聞名的

Unknown

未知的

There is no known reason for the accident.

事故的原因還不得而知。

 

As recently as six months ago her name was almost unknown in this country.

就在六個月前,她的名字在這個國家幾乎無人知曉。
