英文詞匯（二）Approach, Deliberately, Palate

Approach  /əˈprəʊtʃ/  verb, noun

一開始在學校學的Approach只有靠近、接近（to come near or nearer to something or someone）的意思。就業了以後，有較多的機會接觸到英文信和email。才知道approach 還有處理、接洽，要求等等意思。

例：

If you look out the window on the left, you will see that we are now approachingthe Eiffel Tower. 

如果你從左側的窗口望出去，就可以看到我們正接近埃菲爾鐵塔。

I am not sure how to approachthe problem.

我對處理這個問題沒有把握。

She has been approachedby a modeling agency. 

一家模特兒經紀公司曾與她接洽過。

Approach名詞的意思除了有前面所說明的以外，還有（思考問題的）方法(a way of considering or doing something)，以及路徑的意思(a route that leads to a place)。

如：

Since our research so far has not produced any answers to this problem, we need to adopt a different approachto it 

由於到目前為止，我們還沒有研究出任何解決這個問題的方法，所以我們需要換一種思考方式了。

There is a very steep approach to the house. 

有一條很陡峭的路徑可通往那個房子。

例：

那已是你從寶拉那裡得到跟道歉最相近的東西了。（意指寶拉不可能有道歉的動件。）

Deliberately  /dɪˈlɪb.ər.ət.li/   adverb

看到deliberately這個字，知道是故意地、存心地的意思(consciously and intentionally)，沒想到卻另可解釋為從容地、不慌不忙地(slowly and carefully)，又多學到一個新單詞，實在太好了！

例：

I am sure he says these things deliberatelyto annoy me. 

我敢肯定他就是故意說這些事來氣我的。

Calmly and deliberately, she cut up his suits one by one.

她平靜地、不慌不忙地把他的西裝一件一件剪成了碎片。

Palate  /ˈpæl.ət/  noun

第一眼看到這個字Palate時，把它看成Palette （調色盤），結果鬧出了個大笑話。其實Palate有兩個的意思，一個是顎(the top part of the inside of your mouth)。

另一個是味覺(a sense of taste)、以及（對美食、美酒的）鑒賞力(a person's ability to taste and judge good food and wine)。

例：

The restaurant serves Korean food adapted for the American palate.

這家餐廳提供的韓國食物為了適應美國人的味覺而作了一些改變。

a discriminating palate.
