英文詞匯（一） Ambitious, Signature, Preserve

學了英文好多年，但每每在做英翻中練習時，經常詞不達意。反省下來，才發現是自己對英單〔英文單詞〕的中文語意，認識的不夠透澈。現在重新學習英單，應該不算太晚。在重新學習的過程中，也跟各位分享，大家一起進步。

Ambitious    /æmˈbɪʃ.əs/   adjective

這個字在 Cambridge Dictionary 的解釋是有抱負的；志向遠大的；雄心勃勃的 (having a strong wish to be successful, power, or rich)，以及（計劃、想法）要求過高的；需要極大努力及才能的；費勁的(if a plan or idea is ambitious, it needs a great amount of skill and effort to be successful or be achieved.)。

不過在學校時，只知道野心一個意思。變得在做英翻中時，中文譯文不僅單調，而且也無法譯出實際的意涵。

所以在文章中看到這個字時，在參考前後文，我們可以譯成：雄心勃勃；志向；進取心；宏偉；宏大等等。

例：

The original completion date was over-ambitious, so we have had to delay the opening.

當初在確定完工日期時太雄心勃勃，後來我們不得不延後落成典禮。

Her lifelong ambition was to become a bestselling writer.

她的人生志向是成為暢銷書作家。

It’s good to be ambitious, but make sure you don’t burn yourself out.

有進取心是好事，但要當心不要太透支自己了。

We weren’t sure if we could pull off the plan because it was so ambitious.

我們不確定是否可實現這個方案，因為它太宏大了。

Signature  /ˈsɪɡ.nə.tʃər/  noun

看到這個字，一般人都會譯成〔簽名〕（your name written by yourself）同autograph。

例： 

I mistook your signatureand thought the letter was from someone else.

我誤認了你的簽名，以為這封信是另外一個人寄來的。

但signature另外也有特色菜、主題，招牌產品的意思(a distinct characteristic or product that is closely associated with someone.)。

如：

This has been a sharp dip in the sales of Apple's signature productthe iPhone.

蘋果招牌產品iPhone的銷量銳減。

Apart from its signature dish,steak (freshly delivered from America and Australia), this restaurant also serves other main dishes. 

這家餐廳除了有來自美國及澳洲的新鮮牛排當主題菜外，也提供了其他主菜。

If Nasi Lemakis Malaysian’s signature dish, Hainan Chicken Rice is the Singaporean’ssignature dish, Braised Pork Rice is the Taiwanese’s signature dish, then the Fish And Chip will be New Zealand’ssignature dish. 

如果說椰漿飯(Nasi Lemak)是馬來西亞的特色菜，海南雞飯(Hainan Chicken Rice)是新加坡的特色菜，滷肉飯(Braised Pork Rice)是台灣的特色菜，那麼炸魚薯條(Fish and Chip)可以說是紐西蘭的特色菜了。

Preserve /prɪˈzɜːv/  verb/noun

Preserve當動詞用時，不外乎有保護，維護，保存及保養(to keep something as it is, especially in order to prevent it from decaying or being damaged or destroyed.)等等的意思。

We want to preserve the character of the town while improving the facilities. 

我們想在改善市鎮設施的同時也可以保存其特色。

Putting varnish on wood is a way of preserving it. 

在木料上塗上亮光漆是保護木料的一種方法。

但名詞除了從動詞延伸的果醬、蜜餞外，也有專門活動或專利的意思(an activity that only one person or a particular type of person does or is responsible for)，或是特指野生動物的保護區– 同reserve。

Owning racehorses is the preserveof he rich.

擁有賽馬是富人的專利。
