英文詞匯（三） Stigma, Lament, Novelty, Coddle, Stake out, Staple

前面兩章分享英文詞匯時，一次只有三個詞匯，覺得意猶未盡。所以從今天開始，我決定每一篇文章，增加到六個英文詞匯。
這些英文詞匯，好像知道意思，又好像不是那個意思。所以往往在讀文章時，會lady 卡卡的。所以趁著這個分享的機會，好好強化自己的英文理解能力吧！
Stigma /ˈstɪɡ.mə/ noun
我第一次認識Stigma，那時的翻譯告訴我是（花）柱頭 (the top of the central female part of a flower, where pollen is received)。後來在新聞上或社論上常常看到這個字，那時不太理解為什麼會突然穿插這個字。
那時我也不求甚解，直到有一天，有人問了我一句英文social stigma，問我什麼意思。我支支吾吾的，隨便說了個什麼，”社會柱頭”。結果那人抓抓頭，滿臉困惑地走了。
那人一走開，我立馬線上查詢Cambridge Dictionary，結果出來的解釋是！！！差太多了吧！아줌마（大嬸）！！！
Stigma是恥辱、（尤指不公正的）污名的意思，英文解說為，”a mark of shame or disgrace associated with a particular circumstance or quality; a strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something, especially when this is unfair”。
而social stigma的正確翻譯是，”社會污名”。
例：
There is no longer any stigma to being divorced.
離婚不再是什麼恥辱的事了。
Being an unmarried mother no longer carries the social stigma that it used to.
未婚媽媽不再像過去那樣在社會上背負污名了。
Lament /ləˈment/ verb, noun
從小開始學英文，認識的字都是從教科書來的。大部份是為了應付考試，而硬背下來的。考完試後，上班後因為不常用到，便還給教科書了。而那些還給教科書的字，卻大多跟日常生活息息有關，如表達個人感覺，感受等等。
Lament 這個字，在還沒有查字典時，有給我一種檸檬的感覺。酸酸的，像初戀。但其實lament 是一種惋惜的心情，看到初戀情人結緍不幸福，感到痛惜 （to express sadness and feeling sorry about something），也算有關係啦！
例：
The poem opens by lamenting (over) the death a young man.
這首詩的開篇表達了對一個青年之死的惋惜之情。
My grandmother, as usual, lamented the decline in moral standards in today’s society.
一如往日，我的祖母對現在社會的道德標準世風日下深感痛惜。
“My whole life has been a lie,” one of my friends lamented on Twitter.
我的一個朋友在Twitter感嘆道，”我的一生都是謊言。”
若lament 當作名詞，則為輓歌，悼詩悼文之意（a song, poem, or other piece of writing that expresses sadness about someone’s death）。
例：
The whole play can be interpreted as a lament for lost youth.
這整部劇可以說是對逝去青春的一首輓歌。
Novelty /ˈnɒv.əl.ti/ noun
Novelty 這個字看起來跟novel（小說） 好像喔，好像有關係。沒錯！Novel的名詞是小說，而它的形容詞是新奇的、新穎的意思。Novelty是Novel（新奇的、新穎的）的名詞。(the quality of being new and unusual; something that has not been experienced before and so is interesting)
例：
The novelty of these toys soon wore off and the children became bored with them.
很快地小朋友對這些玩具的新奇感消失了，開始厭倦了起來。
In Britain in the 1950s, television still had novelty value.
在這1950年代的英國，電視機仍然有新奇價值。
Novelty也可解釋為新奇廉價的物品（常作為禮物贈送的）, a cheap unusual object such as small toy, often given as a present.
例：
A Christmas cracker usually contains a paper hat, a joke, and a novelty.
聖誕節彩包爆竹中通常裝有紙帽、笑話和新穎的小玩意兒。
另外，Novelty可以跟Marvel一起記，Marvel也是有對新事物的新奇感覺。而Marvel在Cambridge Dictionary 的解釋是，”（對…）感到驚奇，驚歎奇跡；令人感到驚奇的事物（或人），to show or experience great surprise or admiration，a thing or person that is very surprising or causes a lot of admiration）。
Coddle /ˈkɒd.əl/ verb
Coddle是一個動作，就是把東西放在沸水中煮軟，特指雞蛋，to cook food, especially eggs, in water just below boiling temperature。如：Coddle egg 煨煮的雞蛋。
老實說，之前不認識Coddle這個字，一直到我上高級會話課的時候才知道這個字。但時不時的會忘記這個字，後來我把這個跟雞蛋連在一起記成白煮蛋後，完全記憶100%。
Coddle除了前面的意思之外，還有嬌養、溺愛、和悉心呵護的意思(to protect someone or something too much)。
例句：
The steel industry is coddled by trade protection and massive subsidies.
鋼鐵產業受到貿易保護和巨額補貼的雙重呵護。
The ‘Game of Thrones’ finale has failed because it coddled the audience.
『權力的遊戲』結局因為溺愛觀眾而失敗。
Stake (something) out phrasal verb with stake
財經文章中最常見到Stake是股份的意思，但最初是「可以支撐植物或構成圍欄的木樁或標樁」的意思（a strong stick or metal bar with pointed end）。
而stake (something) out 有「監視」之意 (to watch a place continuously in order to catch criminals or to see a famous person)，以及表明（觀點及立場）之意(to establish or make clear you opinion or position on something)。
例：
The police staked out the hotel where the two terrorists were reported to be staying.
據報，那兩名恐怖分子藏匿在這家旅館中，警方於是展開監視。
Two of the president’s chief advisors have staked out opposite opinion on this issue.
總統的兩位主要顧問在這一問題上表明了相反的立場。
Staple /ˈsteɪ.pəl/ verb, adjective, noun
Staple大家都知道noun是訂書針或U型釘；verb是用釘書釘釘住，而訂書機則是Stapler。
但Staple 有更值得記住的其他意思：一為主要產品或某物的主要部份(a main product or part of something)，二為基本的或主要的，常規的或標準的的意思(basic or main; standard or regular)。
例句：
Shortages mean that even staples (basic foods) like bread are difficult to find.
物資短缺意味著連麵包之類的主食都難覓蹤影
Phosphate has been a stable of this area for many years.
磷酸鹽多年來一直是這一地區的主要産品。
The staple diet here is mutton, fish and boiled potatoes.
這裡以羊肉、魚和煮馬鈴薯爲主食。
